Conference "Achievements of Modern Otorhinolaryngology" - A report

Annual Autumn Conference of the Ukrainian Scientific Medical Society of Otolaryngologists with international participation “Advances of Modern Otolaryngology” has been held on October 3-4, 2017, at Ukrainian House, Kyiv, Ukraine.

A plenary meeting “Novel Methods of Diagnostics and Therapy of Allergy of Upper Airways” has been organized in the frames of the Conference. During this meeting, a co-founder of INUNIMAI Prof. Victoria Garib (Medical University of Vienna, Center of Pathophysiology, Infectology and Immunology, Department of Pathophysiology and Allergy Research, Division of Immunopathology) gave a lecture “Prognostic Value of Molecular Profiling of Allergic Rhinitis”. In her speech, Prof. Garib emphasized that advances in molecular allergy research give the possibility to look at the mechanisms of allergy development from the new angle of view, reveal molecular connections between pollen and food allergy, identify patient risk groups in the development of severe system reactions, perform rational vaccine selection for adequate immunotherapy and monitor its efficiency. Latest studies clearly demonstrate that early sensitization profile can serve as a base for further prognosis of allergy development.

Prof. Inna Gogunska, MD, gave a speech “Screening and molecular diagnostics of allergic rhinitis” with the emphasis on the latest aspects of molecular allergy diagnostics. Prof. Gogunska made a comparative analysis of standard diagnostics vs molecular diagnostics efficiency, showed clinical cases and suggested a screening and diagnostics algorithm based on molecular methods.

Dr. LV Zabrodska told about diagnostics and therapy of hereditary angioedema.

Dr. OA Naumova gave the speech “Staphylococcus entherotoxins as a trigger of allergy inflammation” where she described the role of Staphylococcus entherotoxins in the development of allergy inflammation in rhinosinusitis polyposa and allergic rhinitis and suggested a molecular allergy diagnostic algorithm based for patients suffered from such diseases.

In her speech “New therapy approaches for allergic rhinitis”, Dr. DD Zabolotna shared with the audience new results obtained in the Department of Inflammation Diseases, SI “Prof. O. Kolomiychenko Institute of Otolaryngology NAMN of Ukraine”.

In total, the Conference clearly indicated the growing interest and willing to use molecular methods in routine practice by many Ukrainian clinicians. This will undoubtedly lead to the more precise diagnostic results and better therapy in the nearest future.
