The Parkhotel Schönbrunn is located in the carefully restored former guest house of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It was originally a rest stop, opened in 1787, which was taken over by Ferdinand Dommayer in 1823 and expanded into an inn. In the decades that followed, it was transformed into the venue for lavish balls, and became a byword for the Viennese lifestyle. Numerous works by Johann Strauss the elder and younger, as well as their contemporary Joseph Lanner, were premiered here.

Many of Emperor Franz Joseph’s guests stayed in this first-class hotel.

Events in Vienna in February

Eistraum (Dream on Ice)

18th February 2018 to 31st March 2018

All throughout the coldest months of Austrian Winter, the prestigious, heritage plaza cornering the Town Hall and the Burgtheater is flooded and frozen, so local partygoers structure some lights, loudspeakers on a stage and they all celebrate in a group that then creates an ice rink from the frozen ice. All genres of music are played at the rink, including Sedated waltz, spin rock, funk, and reggae. Around the rink there will also be a variety of refreshments and snacks for purchase such as hot chocolate, beers, L’Eternité, hotdogs and street food comfort for the revellers. The ice rink is great for the whole family and is open from January until March.

Leopold Museum

Egon Schiele. Expression and Lyricism

February – end of October 2018

On the 100th anniversary of Schiele’s death a group of his paintings and graphic artworks will be presented for the first time in a dialog with various handwritten pieces and poems, as well as documents, photographs and other objects from his life. This approach allows the exhibition to look at his personal experience and lyrical talent from a fresh vantage point. The contemporary pieces displayed in parallel reflect on Schiele’s oeuvre from a modern-day perspective. In line with the year’s thematic focus, the Leopold Museum will also be showing works on paper from its extensive repository of graphic works by Klimt alongside various sheets by Koloman Moser.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna

Stairway to Klimt

February 13 – September 2, 2018

As was previously done for the 150th birthday of the painter in 2012, the "Klimt bridge" will again be installed in the stairway of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna in 2018. At a height of 12 meters, visitors have a direct view of, among others, the picture cycle of 13 paintings designed by Klimt, which was created between the pillars and arcades. These so-called spandrel and intercolumnar paintings number among the most important of Gustav Klimt's early works.

There are plenty of buildings to visit, as well as cafés and coffee bars to hang out in. The Museum Quarter, for example, is a part of the city that attracts many thousands of visitors each year. This fascinating, attraction-filled area is home to great institutions such as the Leopold Museum, the Art Hall of Vienna, the Vienna Architecture Centre, the Museum of Modern Art, the Dancing Quarter, a children’s museum and a few event and concert venues.

It’s a lively place, to say the least, and you can find amusement there during the day and sometimes also in the evening.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Vienna!
